No it’s not!

Bronze is a traditional material used in boats. It is cheaper, softer and easier to cast and showed good resistance to corrosion in the marine environment, which lead to it’s widespread use.

However, over the last several decades there have been major advancements in metallurgy, developing stainless steels that are superior to bronzes. This is why Arctic Steel chooses to cast their seawater strainers in duplex 2205 stainless steel, which ensures exceptional resistance to corrosion (far better than 316L).

We now have a choice…… Some still use traditional bronze strainers, simply because that’s what they have always used, however more and more boat builders are now choosing high quality stainless steel over bronze.

The reasons:

  • A better mix of metals in your engine room
  • Stronger
  • Lighter
  • Better looking than greening bronze
  • Superior design and performance
  • Longer life
